Eight blacktip sharks released in Cabilao Island, Bohol, Philippines

newsp3On May 1 2005, eight blacktip sharks were released to the fish sanctuary Pantudlan on Cabilao Island, Bohol, Philippines. MarineFauna and POLARIS beach and dive Resort shared the costs for the purchase and transport of the sharks. “The sharks have best chances to find a new home in Cabilao. All they need such as hunting grounds in the wide backreefs for squid and small fish as well as sandy patches to relax the baby sharks find here in Cabilao” says Dr. Thomas Heeger of MarineFauna. Four male and 4 female sharks were released with the hope of regeneration of the once abundant blacktip sharks. But intense fisheries for meat and shark fin have decreased the numbers of blacktip and hammerhead shark. The Mayor of Loon, Mr. Lopez, has imposed a ban on the shark fishery and the chances are promising to see a growing population in the future.
